15 Questions to Replace “What Was Interesting at School Today?”

How many times have you asked your child how their day at school went and been disappointed by silence? The question shapes the answer. To get an honest response, get to know your child more deeply, and help them understand themselves, it is worth paying real attention and asking the right questions.

“With small changes in wording, these questions will suit children of different ages. The main thing is to show genuine interest. Children always feel attention” — Mariia Stefaniuk, psychologist.

“The answer we get from our children depends on how and when we ask these questions” — Mariia Stefaniuk, psychologist.

You do not need to ask all the questions in one day. Start with one or two. After a while, you will understand which ones prompt the most meaningful answers.

Ask only when you can focus. Your child should feel that you are fully engaged.

Do not interrupt. In fact, this is a good rule for any conversation with anyone.

Ask about feelings. After your child tells you about an experience, find out what they felt. Emotional intelligence is a very important skill, so help develop it.

Thank your child for their trust, share how you feel about what you heard and tell them about a similar experience. Value and nurture your child’s desire to share what matters most with you!
